Background of the Study
Indigenous languages are repositories of cultural heritage and identity, yet many face the risk of extinction due to globalization and language shift. In Jos, Plateau State, 3D animation is emerging as an innovative tool for documenting and revitalizing indigenous languages. By transforming oral traditions and cultural narratives into visually dynamic 3D animated stories, this approach provides a modern medium to record, preserve, and disseminate linguistic heritage (Ibrahim, 2023). 3D animation can vividly illustrate traditional tales, proverbs, and historical events, offering an engaging way for younger generations to connect with their ancestral language. The animation process facilitates the preservation of pronunciation, intonation, and context, which are often lost in textual documentation. Additionally, these digital artifacts can be easily stored, shared, and integrated into educational programs, making them invaluable resources for language revitalization initiatives (Chinwe, 2024). The project aims to analyze how 3D animation can serve as both a documentation tool and an educational resource, thus providing a dual benefit of cultural preservation and language teaching. Recent studies underscore the potential of multimedia and animation in improving language acquisition and cultural appreciation (Afolabi, 2025). This study will assess the effectiveness of 3D animated content in capturing the nuances of indigenous languages and its impact on learner engagement and cultural pride in Jos.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional methods of documenting indigenous languages, such as audio recordings and written texts, have limitations in capturing the full richness of cultural context and non-verbal expressions. In Jos, many indigenous languages are at risk as younger generations show less interest in learning them due to the absence of engaging educational materials (Ibrahim, 2023). The current documentation processes do not adequately convey the tonal and expressive elements that are critical to indigenous communication. Moreover, the lack of modern digital tools in language preservation efforts has led to a gap between cultural heritage and contemporary educational practices. Although 3D animation offers a promising solution by bringing language and culture to life visually, its application remains limited by high production costs and technical challenges (Chinwe, 2024). This study aims to address these gaps by analyzing the role of 3D animation in indigenous language documentation. It will evaluate the effectiveness of animated narratives in preserving linguistic details and cultural context, assess the engagement of learners with animated content, and identify technical and budgetary constraints that may impede widespread adoption. The research seeks to provide a comprehensive framework for integrating 3D animation into language documentation projects, ensuring that indigenous languages are not only preserved but also revitalized for future generations (Afolabi, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
• To evaluate the effectiveness of 3D animation in documenting indigenous languages.
• To assess its impact on learner engagement and cultural preservation.
• To identify technical challenges and recommend strategies for optimization.
Research Questions
• How does 3D animation enhance the documentation of indigenous languages?
• What is the impact on learner engagement and cultural pride?
• What challenges must be addressed for effective implementation?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the innovative use of 3D animation for indigenous language preservation, providing a modern approach to safeguarding cultural heritage (Ibrahim, 2023). The findings will help educators and cultural institutions in Jos to adopt digital tools that enrich language documentation and foster renewed interest among younger generations (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the use of 3D animation in documenting indigenous languages at Jos, Plateau State. It focuses solely on animation as a documentation tool.
